Engineering the earth

Geological investigation.
Essential for identifying the ideal well design.

A feasibility study indicates whether a particular site is suitable for geothermal energy. However, these results do not form the basis for the final design of the geothermal heating system or for the design and drilling of the wells. A geological analysis is essential to determine the characteristics of a potential geothermal reservoir.

Advantages
A geological investigation, consisting of petrophysical, geophysical and geochemical analyses, ensures that the well design and drilling technique meet environmental, technical and performance standards. This results in a well configuration that allows optimal extraction of the available heat.

Our activities
On the basis of petrophysical and geophysical analyses, we make a geological model, which we can use to determine the ideal well configuration and draw up master plans with the optimal well configuration for several doublets (i.e. a production and an injection well) in a large area. Using these together with the results of the seismic study and reservoir modelling, we can translate the initial well design (prepared for the feasibility study) into a definitive well design.

Projects

Deep geothermal SE Drenthe, the Netherlands

We carried out an extensive geological investigation of the potential for deep geothermal energy in southeast Drenthe (commissioned by the Stichting Tuinbouw Emmen and the Province). Read more...

Ethiopia, deep geothermal

A Dutch consortium lead by KEMA and IF Technology studied the potential and major bottlenecks for geothermal energy in Ethiopia on their own account. The Dutch organization "de Zevenheuvelenloop" sponsored the study. Read more...
