Coal is still widely used for electricity generation. However, burning coal produces more CO2 than other fossil fuels. In many countries, mines have been closed, even though they still hold large coal reserves. Now there is a new technique that can be used to generate electricity from coal in a sustainable fashion. This technique is called Enhanced Coal-bed Methane (ECBM).
Advantages In the Netherlands large coal reserves in South Limburg, De Peel, Zeeland and the Achterhoek are being exploited sustainably using ECBM. CO2 is injected into underground coal seams and stored there. The CO2 bonds with the coal, releasing methane gas (CH4), which is burned to generate electricity. Another advantage is that three times as much CO2 can be stored as is released by burning the methane. Using this technique around the world could contribute to a significant reduction in CO2 emissions. | | Our activities We have the knowledge and expertise to investigate the potential for ECBM projects around the globe.
