At IF we follow debates on key issues related to sustainability and spot promising trends. In recent years, we have investigated the possibilities of storing compressed air and CO2 underground. We have also carried out research on extracting methane from groundwater and storing CO2 in coal seams. Our aim is to come up with sustainable solutions for today’s problems. Innovative solutions Demand for electricity fluctuates, but conventional power stations produce a base load. When demand is low, surplus electricity can be stored in the ground and then retrieved later as demand increases. More details? Read more… Underground storage of CO2 is attracting a great deal of interest as a solution for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. However, the costs of this technology are high and, due to geological constraints, it cannot be applied everywhere. More details? Read more… Coal is still widely used for electricity generation. However, burning coal produces more CO2 than other fossil fuels. In many countries, mines have been closed, even though they still hold large coal reserves. Now there is a new technique that can be used to generate electricity from coal in a sustainable fashion. More details? Read more…
