Engineering the earth

Energy from the environment
How we obtain energy from deep lakes and from asphalt

There are sources of thermal energy all around us. Cold water from deep lakes can be used to cool buildings. The water is then returned to the lake, where it cools again and the process is repeated. Another example is road surfaces, where the temperature of the asphalt can reach 70°C in the summer. This heat can be stored in the ground using asphalt collectors and used to heat buildings or to keep road surfaces free from snow and ice in the winter.

Advantages
These green technologies, combined with other systems such as heat pumps, can make a major sustainable contribution to meeting our energy needs.

Our activities
At IF we have considerable experience of designing projects using environmental energy and we know a great deal about the technical and legal issues involved.
