Engineering the earth

Geothermal energy – heating buildings and generating energy using the heat within the earth

Our planet was originally a sea of boiling magma. As this cooled, the core, the mantle and the Earth’s crust were formed. As a result, a great deal of energy is trapped in the core in the form of heat and new energy is created there every day. This energy travels up to the mantle and the crust, to depths where we can access it and use it to heat homes, offices or greenhouses, and to generate clean energy (mainly electricity).

Advantages
The supply of deep geothermal energy is virtually inexhaustible. If we were to use just 1% of the available energy under the Netherlands, we would be able to heat around 10 million homes for 30 years. Deep geothermics is the sustainable energy solution and it’s always available, in contrast with solar and wind power. It can be used directly for heating or – if the temperatures are high enough – to generate electricity.

Our activities
At IF we can contribute at all stages of a drilling project, from a quick scan, through a geophysical (seismic) and petrophysical analysis, to designing and drilling the wells, and setting up the technical facilities.
